Rumours (Original Mix) (HYPE055) [clip] by Hypercolour

Bristol duo Outboxx return after a 12-month hiatus with their trademark low-slung house sounds, and another collaboration with vocalist and lyricist, Naomi Jeremy. With previous releases on fellow West Country labels Futureboogie and Idle Hands, Outboxx debut here on Hypercolour, completing their Bristol label hat trick. Sealing the release is a remix from Detroit’s Andrés, the prolific producer behind multiple releases on La Vida and Kenny Dixon Jnr’s Mahogani Music and KDJ labels. The Original mix of ‘Rumours’ opens proceedings with a firm reminder of the production quality that Outboxx so clearly posses; with a slugged out beat, spaceship pads and the vocal prowess of Naomi Jeremy, we have here a fitting track to keep the embers of summer burning bright. The signature sound of remixer Andrés is stamped all over his version as he gently adjusts elements of the original, putting a greater focus on the scintillating pads and offering a beach-side alternative to the more melodic Original Mix. A second original production from the duo, ‘So Strong’ provides a cool end to a coherent release, with well-poised keys combined with finely crafted ambient tones to provide a worthy contrast to the accompanying tracks.

Pressing Matters (Original Mix) (HYPE054) [clip] by Hypercolour

The Cyclist produces, what he has termed, “Tape Throb”; musical excursions into techno dance that echo the production techniques and warm sounds of the electronic pioneers, taking his cues from the likes of Throbbing Gristle and Boards Of Canada. His releases to date on labels like Stones Throw, All City Records, Music Is For Losers and Crash Symbols have seen him rack up four full length albums (including under his Buz Ludzha moniker) with plenty more juice in the tank, as his debut on Hypercolour attests to. “Pressing Matters” harks back to the golden age of breakbeat; bendy synths and pliable bass smack in the face of brain melting breaks, delivered with energy and a very authentic touch. A hugely unique sound and without frontiers, it’s a cut that will cross genres with ease. Robag Wruhme never fails to disappoint as a producer/remixer; his purple patch seems to show no sign of letting up, with releases on Pampa, Kompakt and remixes for Stimming, Alter Ego and Paul Kalkbrenner. His remix of “Pressing Matters” masterfully flips from its breaks origins into a twisted four to the floor belter, with grandiose touches and church like organs giving it a spiritual spin. “Back In ‘92” will indeed evoke memories 24 hour pirate radio output and raving in fields, and for those who weren’t there first time around, it’s a cut that’s as fresh and vital sounding today as it ever was, with light piano riffs and melodious keys over the choppy drums. Featuring the vocal talents of Tanaya Harper, “Push” closes the EP in fine style; intricate drum patterns and rolling snares jar against the ethereal vocal performance and brooding synths, a quintessentially British type of production and one that treads similar territory to Jamie XX’s recent pathos to UK rave culture.

Tippa Lee - Sound Killa (Mungo's Hi Fi Remix) by Stones Throw Records

Various - Hypercolour Remixes Vol. 1 (HYPEDIGCD09) [clips] by Hypercolour

1. Maya Jane Coles – Something In The Air (Bonobo Remix) 2. Kris Wadsworth – Mainline (Jimmy Edgar Remix) 3. Luke Vibert – Stabs Of Regret (Falty DL Remix) 4. Glimpse & Martin Dawson – Fat Controller (Roman Flugel Remix) 5. Shenoda – All Ears (Mr. G Remix) 6. Kerrier District – Techno Disco (KiNK Remix) 7. Mark Henning – The Right Time (Chris Simmonds Remix) 8. Tom Demac – Critical Distance Pt 2 (Hrdvision Remix) 9. George FitzGerald – Every Inch (Deetron Remix) 10. Maxxi Soundsystem – Regrets We Have No Use For (Matthew Herbert Remix) Hypercolour enters its 10th year in possibly the rudest health it has ever been in. With an extensive catalogue spanning house, techno, electronica and disco, with rave and breaks jostling for a place in its wide palette of output, the label takes time to reflect on many of the top drawer remixes that have been commissioned over the last ten years. The compilation kicks off with the super smooth Bonobo remix of Maya Jane Coles’ “Something In The Air”; a version that cinematically sweeps over you, its rising melodies and tight percussions making this a standout job from the Ninja Tunes artist. Brooklyn’s FaltyDL came correct with a stunning breaks version of “Stabs Of Regret” (a track featured on Vibert’s Ridmik album) and this is included here alongside another Vibert cut, this time from Kerrier District, and the simply massive KiNK remix of “Techno Disco”. The heavyweight names continue, with contributions and fine remix work from the likes of Mr. G, Matthew Herbert, Roman Flugel and Deetron. An eclectic and varied collection then of some of the remix highlights that the label have offered up over the years, and proof that the art of the remix is still very much alive and kicking!

Fire With Fire (prod. SMILES) by Jez Dior

this week has been as ugly as any we've ever seen. last night smiles & I started this song from scratch to just pour out the feelings & emotions we've felt watching everything go down...I may not be the biggest artist in the world yet, but I do feel like we must use our voices to speak out for what we believe in & STAND UP against all of this violence. it's time to show our faces & let our feelings be heard. this song is a rebuke to police officers who abuse their power & kill innocent people, but also a desperate plea to everyone else to not fight "fire with fire".

Mor Elian - Drum Vortex (Original Mix) (HYPE053) [clip] by Hypercolour

Hailing from Tel Aviv, and cutting her chops on the Los Angeles underground, Mor Elian is a relatively new name on the block, but her deft tastes have seen her share the stage with the likes of Kerri Chandler, Mike Dunn, Seven Davis Jnr, DJ Qu and many more, and most recently, releasing her debut vinyl release on the excellent Prime Numbers label, featuring FXHE’s OB Ignitt on remix duties. On ‘Drum Vortex’, Mor strikes a killer release for Hypercolour, enlisting two big remixes on the release from Joey Anderson and Markus Suckut. On her original mix, ‘Drum Vortex’ rolls out a ricocheting drum workout that indeed goes through the vortex; otherworldly voices and cosmic drones sit in the middle of the mix whilst the rides and hats intensify. Joey Anderson has proven himself as one of the most diverse house producers out there, with offerings for Dekmantel, Syncrophone Recordings and Tanstaafl Planets. Joey remodels ‘Drum Vortex’ into an old style warehouse dub; rolling congas and snares with incessant synth stabs and bending strings, making up for one serious remix from Mr. Anderson. Another interpretation is on offer from Markus Suckut, whose techno prowess has shone for labels like Rekids, Be As One, Mosaic and his own Exile label (run with Johannes Heil). Suckut’s trademark dense beats are in play here, shuffling hats and micro bleeps weave through vocal elements and sturdy percussive work, bringing a touch of the Berghain style to this remix package. Closing the release is another original production from Mor; ‘Basma’ again focuses of the drum groove, with bright and springing claps bouncing off the hazy bottom ends and melodic touches. Pacey and energetic, Mor gets bang on the groove to carve out a club little B2 style track in time honoured tradition.

His one of a kind spellbinding live show is illuminating the world's finest stages such as Panorama Bar - Berlin, Concrete - Paris, Fabric - London, Labyrinth Festival - Japan, Black Market - NYC to name a few and can be witnessed on his recent Boiler Room and XLR8R sessions. At nearly 13 tantric minutes long, 'Windmaker' bubbles and teases with freestyle keys with an almost Middle Eastern flavour, as Mullaert plays snake charmer to his machines, coaxing out deft melodies, airy cymbals and on point beats and percussion. It's a track to completely get lost in, crafted with fine sonics and a gloss that only an artist like Mullaert can achieve with ease. The enigmatic Ukranian producer, Vakula, is drafted in to give a re-interpretation of 'Windmaker'; edgy phased stabs puncture the minimal techno beat, bouncing and reverberating off the kick drum to create a glorious wall of dubby sound that compliments the original mix a treat. Vakula has always impressed with his creative and original music for labels like Firecracker, Dekmantel and his own Leleka imprint, so it's a privilege to have him remix on Hypercolour.

Gary Gritness - Fly Shit (HYPE051) [clip] by Hypercolour

With two releases already under his belt on Clone, Gary Gritness AKA Slikk Tim lands on Hypercolour with “The Sugar Cane Chronicles Vol. 1”. Gritness may be a relatively new name on the block, but his session work for artists like Kenny Bobien, Louie Vega and Grant Nelson has marked up this multi-instrumentalist as a clear talent. Hailing from France, Gritness had been spotted by Underground Resitance’s ‘Mad’ Mike Banks as ‘one to watch’, and on his Hypercolour release, displays a deft hand of producing futuristic funk sounds. A spot on blend of raw drum programming and blissfull jazz funk riffs, “Preachin Some Tight Game” sets the EP’s tone just right with its infectious melodies and cruising groove. Darker 1980’s soundtrack vibes are explored on “Stayin’ Strong Hand” with its thick analogue atmosphere, whilst the laid back and freestyle vibes of “Working Girls” demands to be played in the Cadillac with the top down! EP closer, “Fly Shit”, continues with the tranquil melodies and G-Funk factor.

Exclusive Premiere | Jona - 'The Temple' (Aeon) by change-underground.com

‘Sidetracking’ is Jona’s highly inventive and musically diverse debut album project for Alex Niggemann’s forward-thinking AEON label. The musical jigsaw puzzle began with ‘Sidetracking - Part 1: Prologue’ (an introductory 2-track vinyl instalment with remixes) in January 2016 and is completed in February, with the release of the full-length ‘Sidetracking’ album, featuring 8 more original tracks to form the 10-track CD package. Created over the course of two highly creative years, the concept for ‘Sidetracking’ was for Jona to invite some of his musician and producer friends to collaborate with him in the studio and complement his album’s solo productions. This inspired project features Varoslav (Rue de Plaisance, Paris), Usio (Studio Barnhus), David K (Cocoon), Bolivian percussionist Daniel Aguilar, Italian pianist Giovanni Verga, and Edinburgh-based producer The Reverse Engineer. Driven by his desire to explore new sound perspectives and ideas, Jona has carefully forged his career path by consistently creating exciting and forward-thinking music. His previous label outings: ‘Traffic’ on ‘Lost Tapes Volume 1’ (AEON010) and ‘Gemini EP’ (AEON016), have seen him fine-tune his own unique sound. By incorporating a wide range of styles into his tracks, Jona strives to break down unnecessary boundaries and explore new ideas and ways to ignite that hallowed dancefloor flame. It is therefore no wonder that his solo and collaborative creations for ‘Sidetracking’ have yielded such stimulating aural delights. In advance of the release of 'Sidetracking' on Friday, we give you an exclusive taste of the album, in the form of track 8 'The Temple', and we talk to Jona about the release: http://ift.tt/1X716Wc

DMX Krew - Black Poppy (HYPELP005) [clip] by Hypercolour

Out now on 2LP/CD/Digital http://ift.tt/1Uwdv7j Hypercolour proudly announce the latest long player from UK stalwart, Ed DMX AKA DMX Krew, the visionary British electronic producer who has been responsible for a slew of excellent releases for labels like Rephlex, Spectral Sound, Permanent Vacation and his own Breakin’ Records and Fresh Up Records since the mid 1990s. ‘You Exist’ is DMX Krew’s debut appearance on Hypercolour, and as expected the record features nine tracks of beautifully crafted, melodic electronic sounds. From the opener ‘Spiritual Encounter’, DMX sets the tone perfectly with oodles of pitch perfect synth riffs and driving drums, working his way through snappy and bright pop moments like ‘Hard Copy’ to more melancholic, darker cuts like ‘Computational Paradigm Shift’. DMX breezes in and out of electro techno territory to more contemplative IDM vibes with ease, testimony to the guy’s talent (that’s also seen him wear the hat of over 10 aliases throughout his career to date). ‘You Exist’ captures a very true and genuine musical form, produced and delivered with love from one of the scene’s unsung heroes, and makes it a great companion piece to another Hypercolour released album from similar stock (take your pick from Luke Vibert’s 2014 ‘Ridmik’ album or his latest Kerrier District LP). A consistent and engaging album then from DMX Krew that will pleasure the ear buds of discerning listeners everywhere.

SUNDAY MORNING - 15 - Michna by Danny Daze

THE ARTIST: MICHNA http://ift.tt/1zs8zlq http://ift.tt/1TjbtrD Growing up in both NY and Miami, Michna (real name: Adrian Michna) is that unique breed of artist that draws from both the urban and the tropical. As a youngster, Adrian started DJing parties with cassettes and playing trombone in a band on the NYC bar circuit including the infamous Lion’s Den and CBGB’s. After moving to Miami in the mid-90’s, he co-founded the pioneering Secret Frequency Crew, who deftly mixed instrumental hip-hop and electronic into a coherent whole. Their appropriately titled 12” “Miami Eyes,” became an underground hit. SFC’s debut LP “Forest of the Echo Downs” also put Adrian on Ghostly’s radar as it was one of label founder Sam Valenti IV’s top LPs in 2004. Currently based in Brooklyn NY, Adrian Michna has become a staple in the NYC club scene, known for his chameleon like abilities. Outside of the club, he has been able to pursue interests such as building furniture, bicycles, skeeball and painting. Adrian found his stride as a solo artist by bringing together his myriad influences into a succinct sonic persona with 2008’s debut LP MAGIC MONDAY and well-received single “Triple Chrome Dipped”. It was the producers tightly woven musical amalgam of hip-hop, booty , electro and detailed process that made Michna’s debut album move. He followed up his debut with the EGGSTRA EP which leaned more towards a heady mix of hip hop beats and breakbeat. Four years later, we see a great leap forward in terms of both songwriting and production with a more futuristic house meets hip hop nod on the Moving Mountains EP. The wait was well worth it. THE MIX: Before Michna solo stuff I was in a group called Secret Frequency Crew. We started messing with 4 turntable DJ mixes around 1998. It was mad fun, usually 2 decks were a beat blend, the 3rd was an acapella and the 4th was whale noises/efx. In 2001 we honed in and rigorously rehearsed a set that would span from 90bpm and push up to 130bpm. Inspired heavily by Coldcut's 70 Minutes of Madness Mix and the legendary Blech mix by Strictly Kev and PC. In 2002 we finally recorded it live, after many many takes. I think we pressed 50 CD-Rs and gave them out to friends. Our Max Headroom obsession was growing so we called the mix "Max Headroom for President." It has never been uploaded to the internet.... until now! Enjoy!

Kerrier District - Come On Kerrier (Head High Remix) (HYPE050) [clip] by Hypercolour

Released in May of last year, Kerrier District’s ‘4’ album became an essential long player, not just because it was creator Luke Vibert’s first KD album offering in over a decade, but because it captured Kerrier District at what it does best; funky, sample heavy, entertaining, good time dance music. Tongue firmly in cheek, Vibert delivered an album that ended up, quite rightly, in many end of year polls as a firm favourite of the year. And so, to celebrate Hypercolour’s 50th single release, a crack team of artists were enlisted to handle a remix disc, and they come none bigger than Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer, KiNK and Head High. Villalobos and Loderbauer’s remix of ‘Sexspurt’ shimmers and glistens over its twelve-minute tenure, the micro broken beats and occasional hats lending a steady hand as the psychedelic soundscape unfurls over the bubbling bass frequencies. Fresh from picking up the Resident Advisor Best Live Act of 2015, Strahil Velchev AKA KiNK tackles album favourite ‘Techno Disco’. Churning out a frenzied club re-work, KiNK deploys Reese style basslines, spacey synth motifs that wouldn’t be out of place on a UR record and deep organ riffs, dropping in breakbeats to the solid 4/4 arrangement, never letting the energy levels drop for one second. Wrapping up this killer remix set is Head High (AKA Shed), who slams down a relentless and rolling drum mix of ‘Come On Kerrier’. Irresistibly funky with its heavyweight 90s style beats and infectious melodies, HH keeps it faithful to the Original Mix and the use of its samples, and delivers a driving peak time club mix.
