Town of Union leaders give the green light Thursday to a new alternative music festival for next summer. It would be a three or four day event in July on the Country Jam grounds.
The Comprehensive Planning Commission approved the conditional use permits for outdoor camping and the festival itself. The commission serves as an advisory group to the Town Board.
Town of Union leaders and even local musician Justin Vernon of Bon Iver are working to bring the new indie rock music festival to the area- and it's scheduled just one week after Country Jam.
Bob McCoy, president and CEO of the Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce says a proposed festival of this magnitude will have a huge impact on Eau Claire and the surrounding community.
'It's a very major economic impact. Maybe eight or nine million dollars. People from all over the United States coming in spending money creating a great name for the community and to host another one of this magnitude and totally different and maybe even a whole different audience filling more motel rooms or restaurants, grocery store, gas stations, that's huge,' says McCoy.
Eau Claire native Justin Vernon of Bon Iver has been involved in the project since the beginning.
'Looking at what Justin wants to do, and having somebody like that, you can look around for a long time trying to find somebody that will bring that kind of venue and that kind of magnitude into the community, and it falls in your lap, it's really kind of cool and he's a pretty awesome guy and he's made some investments in the community,' says McCoy.
Michael Strubel with visit Eau Claire says similar festivals lead to a lot of visitors who spend a lot of money.
'The music festivals as it is contribute about 10% to total visitor spending in the Chippewa Valley every year and so adding one on to that will create a significant impact,' says Strubel.
It's still unknown what artists will be performing, but Vernon is sure to surprise.
'The exciting part is who he going to be bringing into town. Especially with him being the host,' says McCoy.
'I think it's cool that it's an indie rock festival. We've got country, we've got rock that we cover but this is a new and growing segment of music and I think it's got a lot of people who really like it so it's great that it's finally coming to Eau Claire on a grand scale,' says Strubel.
The measure will go to the Town of Union Board, which meets on October 14th.
