Singing Mustangs sing their way to international music festival - WDSU New Orleans

A group of musically talented students from Eleanor McMain Secondary School are preparing for a voyage to Sweden. The school's Singing Mustang Mixed Chorus has been invited to participate in an international music festival and will be traveling to Lulea, Sweden this weekend.The 11 students in the choir will be participating in the festival hosted by the 'Singing People Together' Music Conference from Oct. 20 through Oct. 26. The festival committee selected the choir to perform at the festival after visiting the United States last year and hearing about the works of the choir director, Clyde Lawrence.When the students get to Sweden, they will perform two concerts, one in Lulea and the other in Kiruna. They will make a presentation in a three-day workshop sharing the unique flavor of New Orleans music and introducing the other participants to the flare of gospel music. The Singing Mustangs along with groups from Haiti and South Africa will culminate with a concert presenting the uniqueness of each groups style of music.McMain is the first group from the United States to participate in this festival. The 11 singers selected are members of the McMain Singing Mustangs Mixed Chorus, which consists of a total of 64 students in grades nine through 12. The group of young musicians has performed for many community, city and state engagements and presents annual concerts throughout the year. They are also one of the more popular high school choirs to perform at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in the Gospel Tent.
