Ultra Music Festival bans minors

Ultra Festival organizers said the decision to limnit the fest to those 18 and over was 'made to reinforce and promote the safety of all Ultra Music Festival fans.'

The organizers of Ultra Music Festival announced Tuesday that the massive Miami electronic dance music event is banning teens under 18, citing safety concerns.

'This decision has been made to reinforce and promote the safety of all Ultra Music Festival fans and to ensure the overall enjoyment of all future attendees,' organizers said in a statement posted on the festival's website.

The announcement comes after a hectic 2014 festival, during which a security guard was crushed in an opening night stampede caused by crashers who toppled a chain-link fence.

Police also investigated the death of an attendee.

In the afternmath of the festival, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado called for an end to the event, though commissioners ultimately re-upped for several more years.

Regalado said Tuesday that he still believes downtown Miami is a bad place for Ultra, but praised festival organizers for making the event adults-only.

'I think that it's the best decision they could have ever made,' he said. 'That was one of the main issues, the concern for minors. And I think it would be a much better festival now.'

Ultra attracts more than 160,000 attendees each year and is covered by international media. Ticket pre-registration begins Sept. 15. The event is scheduled for March 27, 28 and 29.

Visual arts

Joseriberto Perez, an emerging artist based in Miami, seems to avoid assigning his works meaning; he prefers the works to be ambiguous to the viewer and to lead to their own conclusions. But if you look closely, the artist has managed to create a body of work that examines his Cuban heritage and Miami upbringing in interesting ways.

Miami ballot questions

Two charter amendments proposing to change procedures for leasing submerged lands and require a second referendum for foot-dragging developers also passed.
