Getting a sequel made can be hard work - just ask Jo Moulton with the Temecula Valley International Film and Music Festival.

After a two-year hiatus, the festival returns Sept. 17, and runs through Sept. 21.

Moulton said the after the festival wrapped in 2011, the economy at the time just wasn't ideal to plan for its return the following year.

'When we put it in hiatus in 2011, there was always the attempt to bring it back,' she said. 'It was a combination of personal reasons and financial reasons. At the time a lot of sponsors and potential sponsors were trying to reassess their budgets. The environment at that time was really a challenge.'

Moulton credits the return of the festival to one woman: Beverly Nero of the Deaf West Theater. Nero had called Moulton to ask for help with location scouting for a film she was making. Moulton agreed to show her around Temecula. After loving the area, Nero wanted to eventually screen the film at Temecula's film festival. There was one problem - it was on on hiatus.

'She hounded me for months,' Moulton said. 'She said, 'You can't let that die.' She researched our festival and said we had so much history and brought all these people. Coming from someone I didn't know, I said, 'I guess we have a good reputation.''

Even with the support of Nero, Moulton still wasn't sure that people would submit music and film entries, let alone remember the festival.

But the interest was there, and the festival received a record number of submissions. This year, the Temecula Valley International Film and Music Festival received more than 2,700 music submissions and nearly 8,700 film submissions.

'The whole program is exciting,' Moulton said. 'At first I wondered who was going to submit. We had more submissions in terms of music than ever before. People didn't forget, I guess.'

Around 155 films will be shown throughout the festival at the Carmike Cinemas Temecula Tower 10 theater. The music festival will move to Town Square Park in Old Town Temecula and feature 12 bands performing.

Film submissions for the festival have come from all over the world. In addition to the regular partnership with Canada and Italy, the festival received a large number of submissions from Spain and Germany.

'They submitted more than 30 German films,' Moulton said. 'I said, 'I don't need 30!' At the end of watching all of them, I was already speaking German!'

In another sign of cinematic serendipity, the opening night film, 'A Little Game' starring F. Murray Abraham and Janeane Garofalo, has a close connection with the festival's past.

'I loved the film,' Moulton said. 'I called the guy (writer/director Evan Oppenheimer) to see what kind of participation we could have. We started talking and he said, 'You don't remember me?' He said we screened his first feature film at our festival in 2000. Here it is 14 years later, and we're screening his feature film opening night. This is great; things happen for a reason.'

The festival will also feature a number of industry-related workshops open to the public.

The festival has a rich history of honoring talented performers in both the worlds of music and movies. Previous honorees include Carl Reiner, William Shatner, Etta James, Raquel Welch, Kenny Loggins and Virginia Madsen.

This year, the festival will honor musician Alan Parsons, jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, composers David Schwartz ('Arrested Development') and Lucy Schwartz ('Twilight') and director Joseph Sargent ('Gunsmoke.')

Sargent directed the made-for-television film 'For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story,' starring Andy Garcia.
