Here's how to get a job at a music festival – and keep it
If you've just returned from Glastonbury you're probably feeling the post-festival slump. If you didn't go, you might be looking forward to one of over 300 festivals happening in the UK this year. From bluegrass to techno-house to moombahton (or whatever else you're in to) - we've got enough fields in Britain to please everyone.
But festival season isn't just a time to get drunk and eat hog roast rolls. They're an integral calendar event for any festival, event management, journalism or communications student looking to get their foot on the ladder. They're ideal for gaining experience which, as everyone will tell you, is the best playing card.
So, how do you get a job at a festival?
The first step is applying. Applications usually open about five months before an event and it's a relatively straightforward process - you visit the festival's website, answer some multiple-choice questions, pay a deposit, send through some photo ID, and then you're good to go. This is the point of entry for students that are new to the game. But once you're in - make sure you network to reap the benefits.
Anthony Stockdale - who is helping run this year's Reggae Roast festival in London - brought his sound system to Nozstock after he made friends with the festival's curators at a previous event. By doing this he was able to gain 'invaluable experience in stage management - from helping to run a stage at a festival to networking into a few more events that summer.'
Small festivals - like Nozstock - are the best places for students to apply.
'You can definitely get your teeth into a lot more at the smaller festivals - you get involved with a lot more,' says Storme Gibson, who runs the box office at WOMAD. 'If I'm quiet but the press team have a queue a mile long - I'll get involved and help them out.'
So - you're inside the festival, you've got your work pass, and you're ready. What next? Be prepared to work above and beyond your work hours. Loz Lozza is the production manager at Caversham Festival which has an attendance of 25,000.
Lozza says: 'A hard work ethic is key - the music industry isn't a 9-5 role. You work until you've finished. Sometimes this means a 20-hour day. Stamina, a good diary system, clear communication and a plan B, C, and D as back-up, are all required.'
It's important to take on as much work as possible - after all you're there for work (not just fun). Hannah Colson - who graduated from the communications and media degree at Liverpool University and currently works at MTV - did a stint at Dimensions festival in Croatia in 2014 and found that asking for work reaped both experience and personal benefits.
Colson says: 'I asked the reps at the opening party if they had any extra work going - they did. In return they offered me a ticket to see Mount Kimbie, and also a week of free camping and extra food vouchers.'
But - once the party is over, how do you turn your festival weekend into a festival career? The most important thing to remember is to stay in touch - especially if you want to work there again - with more responsibility than just shepherding intoxicated people to the long-drops.
Stockdale says: 'Festivals work with so many different temp staff across different sites that I doubt they'd remember a great deal about who was doing what and where the year before. But if you know the person who offered you the role, then they tend to trust you with more than the guys who haven't been there before.'
Essentially, if you don't get to know the people who run the festivals, you'll continually be placed at the bottom of the pile, always working the car-park and never progressing to helping to manage a stage.
If you want to make it a career then festival season shouldn't end in the autumn. Show up at local shows, volunteer, put on events, and help bands tour the country. Even if you end up working the car-park for a few seasons before getting to a higher role, it definitely beats spending the summer sat inside Tesco while everyone ignores you because they're using the self-service machine.

Death Reported at Electric Forest Music Festival
ROTHBURY, Mich. - An investigation is underway after one person died during the Electric Forest Music Festival, an event which draws tens of thousands of people each summer.
The person who died was a 20-year-old volunteer from Caledonia.
The Oceana County Sheriff's Department told FOX 17 News Monday morning there were 20 arrests related to the festival. Fourteen of the arrests were made on site.

The Michigan State Police Hart Post and the Oceana County Medical Examiner's Office are waiting for the results of an autopsy conducted on Brian Alan Brockette , a 20 year old, Caledonia, Michigan, man. The victim suffered a medical emergency on Sunday, June 29, 2014, at approximately 11:15pm, and subsequently passed away. The victim was a volunteer for an outside vendor at the Electric Forest Festival. The incident remains under investigation by the Michigan State Police. The Oceana County Medical Examiners Office will complete their investigation after receiving the final autopsy report. Questions about the medical response are to be directed to the Electric Forest Festival promoters, who contracted for medical services. The final autopsy report will be sent to the Oceana County Medical Examiner's Office, and questions concerning those results should be directed to their office. No further information is available at this time. With a small knot of volunteers and a knack for making connections, Cody Walters has become an impresario in his adopted neighborhood of Deutschtown, the North Side flats between Interstate 279 North and the Allegheny Commons Park.
He and his band of wranglers birthed the Deutschtown Music Festival last year, getting sponsors and closure of part of Foreland Street for stages and food trucks during the day and convincing a dozen bar and restaurant owners to be hosts of live music into the wee hours.
More than 40 bands played for free, their recompense being exposure.
'It was a huge success' without breaking even, said Mr. Walters.
He came up with a way to break even this year when the second Deutschtown Music Festival kicks off at 11 a.m. July 12 with the first of 88 bands -- 'twice the number as last year,' he said.
'The interest from the music community in this event has been vast.'
Bar Marco, a Strip District establishment licensed to sell beer outdoors, will tend the fundraiser, a beer garden from 4 to 8 p.m. outside the James Street Gastropub & Speakeasy.
Thousands of people turned out last year, especially for the indoor gigs after a brutally hot day. With a doubling of bands, one stage in the park, outdoor beer sales and extended closure of Foreland, this year will test the festival and the neighborhood in what the organizers hope will become an annual event.
With roots in Deutschtown, it will vine out to Troy Hill's Penn Brewery and Wigle Whiskey's Barrelhouse in Spring Garden.
'There weren't any complaints last year,' said Cynthia Shea, president of the board of East Allegheny Community Council, a festival sponsor.
Mr. Walters also is on the board. 'No complains about noise or trash,' although the council provided adequate garbage collection and had volunteers do sweeps of the area, she said.
'We'll see' about this year. 'Hopefully he has talked to the neighbors who live around there. He does have relationships with business owners, and he got a shuttle' to quell concerns about parking. A bus will shuttle people from the North Shore T stop.
Sponsors include The Sprout Fund, Highmark, WYEP-FM and American Eagle.
Mr. Walters said the festival raised $4,000, and the community council is pitching in $2,000 for the free event, adding, 'At some point, it will have to be monitized.'
Several business owners confirmed the experience was positive.
'The only downside was the heat,' said Jan Puglin, senior bartender at Max's Allegheny Tavern, which packed its Ratskellar for five bands.
'It was a rousing success. Pretty close' to the best day of the year. 'It was so well organized, like a well-oiled machine. The only complaints were from people who wished they had come earlier because they couldn't get in.'
'There were no lingering after-effects of a clean-up, and a lot of young people came in,' said Robin Miller, director of the North Shore North Side Chamber of Commerce. 'The whole face of the neighborhood has gotten much younger.'
Barbara Burns, owner of the Sweet Time General Store, said she appreciates that the event gives bar and restaurant owners 'a chance to see that there is an audience that will conduct themselves well.'
Some of the regular street night life isn't always savory, she said, adding that some bars expect that.
'You can have standards,' she said. 'They can raise the bar of their expectations.'
'The festival attracts people as a destination,' said Nate Wigfield, director of community development for Bistro to Go, an indoor music venue for the festival.
'We don't get that a lot. People pass through, but few people say, 'Let's go to East Ohio Street.' We're excited that the festival can change perceptions.'
In his previous job, Mr. Walters linked clients to services for Green Apple Barter.
Now between jobs, he said of his ability to pull together the scheduling logistics for 15 hours of events, 'I'm a connector.'
He laid the groundwork as a new resident five years ago when he invited 20 neighborhood friends to join him for a bar crawl.
By word of mouth, he had 75 crawlers the next year, then 200, then 300.
'They said, 'Do something else' ' last year. I thought, 'James Street [Gastropub] has jazz and the Park House has live music and the Elks has Banjo Night,' he said. 'Wouldn't it be great to make this neighborhood a music destination?'
A native of Springdale, he and his wife moved to the neighborhood in 2008.
'We fell in love with Deutschtown,' he said.
'I wanted to show these longtime business owners there's a new demographic in the city, and I wanted to show people [from outside the neighborhood] what Deutschtown is about.'

48th season of Bar Harbor Music Festival
BAR HARBOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- One of New England's great music festivals has returned for the summer. The Bar Harbor Music Festival kicks off its 48th season on Sunday, June 29th. This month long event will present music including, encompassing recitals, chamber music, opera, jazz and string orchestra concerts.
More than 100 concertgoers took their seats for the opening night of musical bliss. Organizers said this festival has advanced the careers of more than 1,800 aspiring instrumentalists, singers, and composers. Each musician mirrors the creator of this festival, Francis Fortier, who founded this thriving non-profit nearly 50 years ago.
'Well, I was an ambitious young kid looking for performance opportunities. That's why when I realized Bar Harbor had the cultural legacy that it was a tourism mecca in the United States and all over the world.'
The festival runs through July 27th.

Garden City: Music festival traffic safety is a success

Garden City Police are pleased with the traffic safety succes yesterday during the Boise Music Festival.
Early in the week authorities said they expected around 80,000 people to attend the Music Festival at Expo Idaho in Garden City - and they hoped drivers not attending would plan accordingly.
Police said the five major traffic collisions were far less than what occured during last year's festivities. No collisions invloved pedestrians, though jaywalking was prevalent on Chinden Boulevard and Glendwood Street.
In addtion, Sgt. Blair Brannan said there were no festival related arrests made by the Garden City Police Department.

Michael Deeds: Check out the low
One of the most gratifying things about this job is recommending something that you believe in, then seeing readers take your advice - and tell you afterward that they're glad they did.
It happened two weeks ago when I wrote about singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb, the man who penned hits such as 'MacArthur Park' and 'Up, Up and Away.'
Advance sales to Webb's concert at the Riverside Hotel's Sapphire Room weren't so hot. And I wasn't convinced I could help much by hyping the event only 24 hours before it occurred. But Webb's story fascinated me, and it made for a good Sunday yarn.
Hours after the Statesman hit doorsteps, ticket sales took off. The show sold out. Fans at the concert thanked me for writing the column. All I could say was thank you very much right back.
So in that spirit, let's talk July. It's packed with worthy, high-profile entertainment, but I'd like to try to coax you to some lesser-known, lower-cost gems. All take place at least partly during the day. All are low-key and outdoors.
* IF YOU LOVE CLASSIC ROCK: Grab a slice of pizza and check out PizzalStock V - 4 to 10 p.m. July 11, 4 to 10 p.m. July 12, 3 to 8:45 p.m. July 13, PizzalChik, 7330 W. State St., Boise. $7 food voucher good toward purchases at the show.
If you've ever scarfed a pie at PizzalChik, you know that owner Brad Breakell drums in the house band when he isn't serving brick-oven pizzas with his kids.
Each year, Breakell organizes an outdoor music festival called PizzalStock. And each year, he threatens never to do it again.
'It's just so much fricking work,' he explains.
But it's good for business. About 500 people went through the doors over three days last year.
So here we go again ... PizzalStock V: Still Alive.
'It's going to be a fun weekend,' Breakell admits.
Classic-rock cover songs and tie-dye rule PizzalStock, which showcases about half a dozen bands per day ranging from familiar faces such as Scott Wallenberg of the Blues Addicts to newcomers such as The Suns. You'll find a schedule on PizzalChik's Facebook page, but here are a few highlights:
- The Dark Side Revisited, 9 to 10 p.m. July 12: Breakell assembled this band with musicians including veteran guitarist Russ Martin and saxophonist Kent Persons. They did a two-night staging of Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' in March. It was a blast. (If you miss this group at PizzalStock, it also will perform Aug. 9 at The Linen Building.)
- The Fav, 7 to 7:45 p.m. July 12: Guitar Center store manager Matt Fabbi's groove-centric alt-rock band can flat-out play. You were warned.
- The PizzalChicklets, 9 to 9:45 p.m. July 11, 2 to 2:45 p.m. July 13: I know nothing about this group - except that it's Breakell's daughters' band. 'Nuff said. This is PizzalStock. No pressure. Just family, food and fun.
'It's just a laid-back hippie thing,' Breakell says. 'There'll be beer specials, and we'll be spinning the prize wheel and things of that nature, which always makes for a good time.'
* IF YOU LOVE INDIE-ROCK: Grab a blanket and suntan lotion for the Summer Lawn Bash - 1 to 10 p.m. July 19, Crooked Flats, 3705 Idaho 16, Eagle. $10. Kids 7 and younger free. www.theduckclub.com.
Duck Club Presents - the team behind the annual Treefort Music Fest - is teaming up with Crooked Fence Brewing for this outdoor music festival at Crooked Flats, which is on 5 acres at the former site of The Winery at Eagle Knoll.
It's a gorgeous setting for a broadly appealing lineup of local bands including Edmond Dantes, Virgil, Hollow Wood and Desert Noises, as well as visceral Florida outfit Roadkill Ghost Choir.
Hollow Wood appears on the verge of something bigger. The group is working with Red Light Management, home to acts ranging from Tim McGraw to Alabama Shakes. The young group is on tour in July playing events such as the High Sierra Music Festival in Quincy, Calif. New music from the band has breakout potential. (Listen to my 'Other Studio' radio show at 9 p.m. today on 94.9 FM for a fresh Hollow Wood song, 'Oh My God.')
Headliner Roadkill Ghost Choir - my favorite 'discovery' at this year's Treefort - is a big-time must-see. Its sound is sort of like My Morning Jacket meets Kurt Cobain.
There will be food and Crooked Fence beer, of course - and also a wake skating competition.
How do you wake skate at a lawn bash? Good question. That part of the event is being left up to Crooked Fence organizers, Duck Club co-owner Eric Gilbert says: 'Some sort of wench and some sort of canal thing. I don't know exactly. I'm fascinated.'
* IF YOU LOVE FUNKY BLUES-ROCK: Grab a blanket and hang out at Sunday Blues - noon to 6 p.m. July 20, Julia Davis Park near the tennis courts, Boise. Entry: three cans of food for the Idaho Foodbank.
Because this amounts to a nearly-free festival, you can't go wrong at the Boise Blues Society's 21st annual event. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, including beer and wine. And there's plenty of room for dancing on the grass to local performers (in this order) Mississippi Marshall Hopper, Boise Blues Society Band, Zack Quintana Band, and JT and Smooth Avenue.
But the headliner makes this a can't-miss show: The ferociously entertaining Hamilton Loomis Band.
I'd never heard of the Texas singer-guitarist before he visited Boise in January. Quoting my Scene column, here was the scenario: 'It's 7:20 on Monday night, and Jo's Sunshine Lounge is partying like there's no tomorrow - or at least like everyone will be home by 9:30. Texas soul-rocker Hamilton Loomis flashes a cocky smile, uncorks a thick, bluesy guitar lick, then struts across the stage like a banty rooster. Directly below him, Boise Blues Society president Ken Harris waves a beer pitcher stuffed with cash, enticing fans to kick in a few bucks for the band. A tray-balancing waitress dashes between tables like a running back avoiding tackles.'
It was packed. It was madness. The Hamilton Loomis Band pretty much floored every person there. The group is stylish (choreographed moves!), meticulously rehearsed and flat-out wicked if you dig soul and blues-rock guitar.
Loomis will perform for 90 minutes, so don't forget to bring the Dr. Scholl's for your boogie shoes.

Police: Be cautious and safe during Boise Music Festival
GARDEN CITY -- Those with the Garden City Police Department are advising those who are heading to the Boise Music Festival to have a plan. Around 80,000 people are expected, and police say there is only so much parking at Expo Idaho. 'It's going to be a very busy day,' said Garden City Police Sergeant Blair Brannan. 'Our main concern is the safety of the public, the traveling public. We can't reiterate enough to have patience. There's going to be a lot of traffic. We have alternative locations that you can utilize as far as parking one place and being shuttled into the event itself.' Brannen said it might be a good idea to take use of the offered shuttles. One is going to be at the Home Depot on Eagle Road, and another one going to and from the Downtown Boise parking garage. There is drinking at the Festival, but officers will be around looking for those who might break the rules. 'There is a designated area for the drinking while you're at the venue. Trust me there will be ample officers patrolling on bikes, on four wheelers, in cars, on foot. There'll be plenty of officers, so let's just do it responsibly. If you do drink, and you can't drive have a taxi come get you, or have a designated driver,' said Brannen. New this year, a carnival area, and an earlier date for the concert in the season. Previous years the Boise Music Festival fell during a heat wave, although it's expected to be cooler, Brannen believes it's a good idea to stay hydrated and cool. 'Tomorrow is supposed to be about 80 degrees, which makes it nice and comfortable. The one year, when it was in the triple digits, as you can see, you're going to have more medical issues that take place. So, I mean a nice comfortable 80 degrees makes it nicer for the public itself, let along the emergency staff, who have to run around and take care of it,'Brannen said. So remember, it is going to be busy, and drivers use alternate routes, and plan a little extra time to get to the venue.

This is the Chicago area's definitive Americana and roots music festival, featuring something for virtually all musical tastes, rain or shine on three stages. Performances will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., Wednesday; from 4:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., Thursday; and 1 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
The four-day event, the oldest festival of its kind in the Chicago area, features more than 50 artists from Chicago and around the country. On Friday, a portion of the lineup features Bloodshot Records artists in a celebration of the label's 20th anniversary. Also new this year, advance tickets will be available for each day, in addition to the usual festival four-day pass.
This year's lineup includes such favorites as Billy Joe Shaver, the Holmes Brothers, CJ Chenier, The Bottle Rockets, The Iguanas, Robbie Fulks, and C.J. Chenier and Marcia Ball. Up-and-coming artists Hurray for the Riff Raff, Pokey LaFarge, Jarekus Singleton, The Black Lillies, John Fullbright, The Warren Hood Band, Colin Gilmore and The Howlin' Brothers are also schedule to perform.
The event lineup includes three special performances, as well, including a tribute to Lowell George with the New Orleans Suspects and Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett of Little Feat; Texas troubadour Joe Ely will tear it up with Reckless Kelly as his backing band and the super group, The Split Squad, will feature guitarist Keith Streng, of The Fleshtones, guitarist Eddie Munoz, of The Plimsouls, bassist Michael Giblin, of Parallax Project, and French drummer Florian Barbier.
On the food front, Tom 'Festival' Cimms returns with his mix of classic American BBQ and Louisiana favorites like Cochon de Lait, andouille sausage po' boys, gumbo and jambalaya. Vegetarian options will also be available.
Advance tickets cost $30 per day and can be purchased at at TicketWeb and in person at FitzGerald's. A four-day pass costs $100 and is available at TicketWeb only. A lanyard can be picked up at will call on July 2.
Children 12 and under are welcome with parents until 10 p.m. Tickets for kids cost $5, but no children's tickets will be sold in advance.
The Festival is presented by FitzGerald's, 93XRT and Miller Lite.

LONDON - British music festival Glastonbury kicked off Friday with a morning performance by the Kaiser Chiefs.
The festival, considered the world's largest greenfield music festival, is expected to draw around 175,000 people, with the BBC offering more than 250 hours of TV, radio and digital coverage.

The Kaiser Chiefs were a surprise opening act on the fest's 'Other Stage' Friday. They are set to headline another stage Friday night. 'Glastonbury sing along if you know the words,' said frontman Ricky Wilson, a coach on the BBC's The Voice UK, as he started 'Every Day I Love You Less and Less,' according to a BBC report. 'If you don't, sing along anyway.'
Other acts on Friday's lineup include Disclosure, Blondie, Lily Allen, Paolo Nutini and headliners Arcade Fire. The band will play the main Pyramid Stage, with EDM star Skrillex headlining another stage.

On Saturday, Metallica will be the headline performers, with Kasabian playing the headline spot on Sunday. Other performers include Dolly Parton, Massive Attack, Lana Del Rey, De La Soul, Kelis, Rudimental, The Pixies, Richie Hawtin, Goldfrapp, Bonobo, Interpol and Suzanne Vega.
The weather forecast calls for rain during the festival, with TV footage showing thousands of fans wearing rain ponchos. Glastonbury takes place in Somerset, England on Worthy Farm.
The BBC had to apologize for a TV weather forecast after the 10 p.m. news this week ahead of the festival that had featured an erroneous sub-title that had drawn viewer criticism online. It said that Glastonbury attendees should 'prepare for rape' instead of 'prepare for rain.'
Meanwhile, two people have died on the festival site since it opened its gates earlier in the week, according to U.K. media reports. A 26-year-old man died from what the BBC said was a suspected reaction to illegal drug ketamine, according to a BBC report Friday. It also said that on Wednesday, a 67-year-old woman died in her sleep on the site from what were believed to be natural causes.

Bob Shennan, controller of BBC Radio 2 and director, BBC Music, said: 'Glastonbury is one of the world's most famous music festivals, and once again the BBC will be providing audiences with a magical weekend of coverage, in a way that only the BBC can.' Headliners in 2013 included The Rolling Stones, The Arctic Monkeys and Mumford & Sons. Glastonbury in Southwest England has a population of about 9,000. The festival actually takes place in nearby Pilton, which has less than 1,000 inhabitants.

Miami will host a Korean music and pop culture convention on Saturday, which organizers say will be the first event of its kind on the East Coast.
Kpop Con Miami, which will be held from 11 a.m. until midnight at the Miami Convention Center, will feature movie screenings, games, dancing, panels, contests and more.
K-pop, a South Korean genre that consists of dance, electronic and hip-hop music, has been around for decades. But it wasn't until recently that it became a worldwide phenomenon.
'I like K-pop music because it actually talks about real issues, but it's not too provocative,' said Denzel Williams, 21, who plans to attend the convention.
The idea for the convention was proposed in March, when Ted Kim and his wife Jiyoung, the CEOs of a merchandise vendor Kpoppin USA, approached South Florida Kpop Fans, a local Facebook group, about co-producing the event.
'It was something we put together real quick,' said Jiyoung Kim, adding that the convention was planned to occur the day after Korean boy group Block B features a concert at the Fillmore in Miami Beach.
Block B is one of the first major K-pop acts to perform in the southeastern region of the United States, and many people are coming from around the country to attend the show.
The Kims have completely funded the event, while members of the South Florida Kpop Fans are handling all of the planning and scheduling.
'We've always hoped to do something on this scale, if not bigger in the future,' Jiyoung Kim said. 'It's exciting, and we're hoping to try our best to fulfill everyone's expectations.'
K-pop concerts and events have been held in California, New York and New Jersey, states that have higher populations of Korean-Americans.
But not all K-pop fans are of Korean ethnicity.
Bianca Matheson, 22, who created the Facebook group two years ago, said most of the 773 members are not Korean.
'The main point is that we are fans who are organizing it. This is a really exciting and groundbreaking event,' said Matheson, the main event coordinator. 'In Miami, we don't have a large Korean community but wanted to provide K-pop entertainment for the fans. There's definitely a K-pop interest here.'
Kpop Con Miami will feature many contests, including a singing showcase, a dance competition, as well as a dance party at the end of the night.
Matheson will also be performing with the members of GPK, one of the first K-pop dance cover crews in Miami that she created three years ago. GPK, also known as 'Guilty Pleasure K-pop,' specializes in copying the costumes and dances from music videos of groups such as EXO, Girls Generation and Block B.
The convention will allow for fans to be active participants throughout the day's activities.
Williams, who studies dance at Miami Dade College and aspires to choreograph a dance crew in South Korea, will be one of the judges for the dance contest.
'I'm really excited because it's the first convention and I'm gonna be a part of it,' he said.
Both Kpoppin USA and the South Florida Kpop Fans want Kpop Con Miami to become an annual event.
'It will be really fun to reach out to all of the other K-pop fans out there,' said Cynthia Nunez, 20, one of the convention coordinators. 'I've met so many friends through K-pop. We're like one big happy family.'

We Love Music: Firefly Music Festival Pt. 2 (Dover, DE
Yesterday's list of summertime cover songs by bands playing at the ever-growing Firefly Music Festival was by no means exhaustive, as you'll see below.
The second day of Firefly, Friday, June 20, started around 12:30pm and stretched until 2am. (And for morning people, unlike myself, Red Bull sponsored a breakfast series where you could awake even earlier and catch some up and coming bands.)
My day, however, began with neo-psychedelic band Basic Vacation, hailing from New York City. Vocalist and guitarist Chris Greatti, bassist Jon Paul and drummer Mike Montalbano formed a snappy trio, playing their established songs like 'I Believe' as well as new songs like 'Sirens.' They also played a damn catchy cover of Tears for Fear's 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World.' Greatti said at the time that the band would not play it again after Firefly, but c'mon, guys! That was a really good cover, and you really put your own spin on it.
It was during the performance of Basic Vacation on the lawn stage that I began to notice an odd phenomenon. Lots of kids were carrying large cut-out heads of random celebrities, like Nicolas Cage and David Bowie and Bryan Cranston. I have no idea why they carried them, but these large cut-out heads showed up on the viewscreen monitors surprisingly well when the cameras cut to the audience during any particular show. If anyone can explain to me how this got started, I would be very interested in knowing.
I skipped out of Basic Vacation to catch the end of groovy South African rockers The Kongos - all four brothers named Kongo - close out their set on the main stage. They played their well-known songs 'It's a Good Life' and the catchy 'Come with Me Now' to close out their show. They also apparently teamed up with rapper Moezart for a cover of The Beatles 'Come Together,' which they mixed with 'Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang' by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, continuing the trend of seriously fun covers by every band in attendance.
I caught a bit of Ghost Beach as I moved back across the festival grounds. The electronic duo brought songs like 'Been There Before,' 'Without You,' and 'Moon Over Japan' to an appreciative crowd. Ghost Beach, who were in DC in April to open for The Sounds, have an ambitious touring schedule through the fall, so you may well be able to catch them (just about anywhere other than DC) soon. They are well worth checking out.
My compatriots and I returned to the Firefly lawn stage for New Politics, who wowed the crowd with some crazy acrobatics and breakdancing courtesy of frontman David Boyd. They indeed played a song called 'Break Dance.' The trio hail from Copenhagen, although they live in New York now, and they had a breezy, laidback attitude that seemed born of their Scandinavian homeland. They played songs from their self-titled first album, like 'Give Me Hope,' and songs from their second album, last year's A Bad Girl in Harlem, like 'Harlem' and 'Tonight You're Perfect.' They also covered Justin Timberlake's 'My Love.'
After a break, it was time for the day's big event for me personally - a performance by the Arctic Monkeys on the festival's main stage. I've been an admirer of the Arctic Monkeys for a while, and I particularly like the smoother more adult sound of their fifth album AM, released in 2013. They gave that album a lot of attention, opening with 'Do I Wanna Know?' and closing with 'I Wanna Be Yours' and 'R U Mine.' They also played a lot of favorites from across their catalog including 'Brianstorm,' 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor' and 'Dancing Shoes.' (I've always chuckled at the verses 'Dancing Shoes' for the truth and bite in words like 'And the shit, shock, horror/You've seen your future bride/Oh, but it's oh so absurd/For you to say the first word/So you're waiting and waiting.')
My evening ended with a headlining performance by the Foo Fighters on the festival's main stage. Dave Grohl and the other Foos chewed through a several hours-long performance, generally enjoying themselves and letting go with the occasional belch and letting their hair down.
The Foo Fighters played concert favorites like 'My Hero' and 'Monkey Wrench,' of course. But most surprising was their long encore performance, where they singlehandedly doubled the number of cover songs for the day's festival, beginning with a cover of Alice Cooper's 'School's Out' followed by 'Miss You' by the Rolling Stones, 'Ain't Talking About Love' by Van Halen and 'Under Pressure' by David Bowie and Queen. They capped off the entire thing with their own most popular song, 'Everlong.'
At this point, yours truly is truly exhausted. But I have at least one more report coming your way tomorrow if you want more even more festival. Stand by!

WYEP Summer Music Fest expands in 17th year

Temperature has nothing to do with why Canada's Sam Roberts Band has warm feelings about WYEP and its Summer Music Festival.
The first, and last, time the multi-award winning group performed at the gathering proved to be a break-through show that continues to reap rewards.
'It was a turning point for us with the people of Pittsburgh,' Roberts says.
The musicians had been coming to the city regularly before that festival in 2009, he says, but something magical clicked that day. 'People listened with open minds. We made new fans and they stuck with us. WYEP's support made it a place where we can now come and play some of our best shows,' he says. 'Hopefully, we'll add a few more names to our list June 28.'
That's when they return to headline the station's free 17th annual Summer Music Festival at Schenley Plaza in Oakland. The fest has moved to Saturday, in celebration of WYEP's 40th anniversary year, to offer a full day of activities with extended hours.
'This is a city that welcomes new musicians and we're thrilled to provide a venue for Pittsburgh to discover new artists and new music from some of our favorites,' says station general manager Abby Goldstein.
Summer Music Festival began in 1997 as an outdoor event on the North Shore. 'By 2007, we had outgrown the space and moved to Schenley Plaza. It has been held there every year since. It's centrally located, serving a diverse audience on the pristine, historic lawn of Schenley,' says Paula Hinston, station event director.
The day will open at 2 p.m. with local teen acts (Hat Co., Jessica Bitsura, FYFS and the Options) from WYEP's Reimagination Project, which focuses on creativity and engagement through a music-and-entertainment blog.
'We're very excited about this project and expect to see it grow in the coming years,' Goldstein says.
The featured evening entertainment, starting at 6 p.m., offers a variety of music from the Red Western, Elizabeth & the Catapult, Valerie June and the Sam Roberts Band.
'This is a relaxing, fun festival that is all about musical discovery at one of the most beautiful urban green spaces in the city,' Goldstein says.
The Family Area will open at 2 p.m. under a large tent at the plaza. The I Made It! Market is returning to the festival from 2 to 11 p.m. on Schenley Plaza Drive Extension.
Festivals provide a unique opportunity for a performer, Roberts says.
'Crowds coming to a festival basically are in the best mood they will be in all year,' he says. 'The crowds bring an energy that is very different than anywhere else.'
The band's audience tends to be people who gravitate to 'sort of more rock 'n' roll elements,' he says. 'We live for what we do. I want the audience to feel that - a sense of total dedication on our part of a life of making music. Our motivation is to play music with real passion.'
In the United States, the musicians have played the Lollapalooza festival twice, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits twice, Bumbershoot, Sasquatch!, and several other major festivals, and have been showcased on such American television shows as 'Late Show With David Letterman,' 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,' 'The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,' and 'CBS Saturday Morning.'
'I'm hoping we are just at the sort of a base of an upward curve. I hope all this has been preparation for the best to come,' Roberts says.
He believes 'Lo-Fantasy,' the group's fifth studio album, captures the spirit of the band more than almost all of its previous records.
'He made sure we played with an urgency and spontaneity. It's a very musical record, definitely a departure from some of our earlier work. It didn't feel forced at any time,' Roberts says.
The singer-songwriter and guitarist thinks it will surprise some people. 'Our great mission is to convert the unconverted,' he says. 'I hope they find the music speaks to them in a unique voice.'

The attack also saw a 24-year-old man stabbed. He was taken to an east London hospital, but his condition is not believed to be serious.
A man has been arrested for racially and religiously aggravated assault, after allegedly pulling a skull cap from a Jewish man's head, but no one has yet been arrested in connection with the stabbing.
Oz Katerji, a journalist who witnessed the assault, said: 'About 150 of us were having a party in Markfield Park in Tottenham, neo-Nazi Polish fascists turn up, full scale riot erupted.'
The Haringey Green Party said that the group responsible for the attack are called Zjednoczeni Emigranci (ZE), which translates as 'United Immigrants'.
A spokesman said: 'On Saturday 21st of June, there was a licensed community event in Markfield Park, South Tottenham. Unknown to the locals, police, and anti-fascist campaigners, a small extreme nationalist Polish group, Zjednoczeni Emigranci had also planned an event nearby.
'Taking the peaceful community event by surprise, ZE launched an unprovoked attack, hurling verbal abuse at locals, intimidating the children and families that were present, before turning to physical violence.'
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: 'A group of around 20 people, predominantly male and from the Eastern European community, arrived at the location during the course of the event. This was a loose collection of people - not a designated march.
'Enquiries continue into the subsequent disorder, during which fireworks were thrown. We are not aware of any further injuries.
'A 22-year-old Polish man was arrested after a man's kippah [skull cap] was pushed from his head. He has subsequently been charged with racially and religiously aggravated common assault.'

Fake Cows Bring Wi
A music festival in Britain is finally getting Wi-Fi. But it didn't go about it in a typical way - it brought in fake, brightly painted cows to bring in the Wi-Fi.
Glastonbury Festival has placed these life-size cows around the site so attenders can post to their social media to their hearts' content, according to Digital Trends.
This high-tech herd supplied by EE, the country's largest mobile operator, is equipped with 4G and Wi-Fi and is provided to festival-goers for free.
'Staying connected has become an essential part of any festival-goer's experience and we are thrilled to be back supporting Glastonbury Festival, helping to ensure those on site have the best possible experience,' said EE's brand director Spencer McHugh in a release.
The fiberglass cows are accompanied by signs saying, 'Log in for free moo-bile Wi-Fi. It's udderly fast!'

This July will mark the ninth-annual Pitchfork Music Festival, held in Union Park. If you haven't been to the festival before, this three-day event showcases new and emerging music from a wide variety of genres. If you joined us at last year's festival, you were witness to some great acts, including Foxygen, Yo La Tengo, R. Kelly, and more.
This year's lineup is certainly one to look forward to, with over 40 incredibly strong acts spread out over three days-July 18, 19, and 20. Headlining the three nights will be Beck, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Kendrick Lamar. In addition to the great music, Pitchfork Music Festival will be supporting local Chicago businesses by being home to 50 individual vendors, specialty fairs, and more.

FKA twigs
A fast-rising star, Twigs released her debut album back in 2012 and is already playing Pitchfork this summer. Named as one of Billboard's '14 Artists to Watch in 2014', FKA twigs delivers a unique, mellow sound to the P4K Festival line-up. Get a taste of her style with her video of 'Hide'.
Sun Kil Moon
A great act to check out when you're at the festival in July. Mainly acoustic guitar at the forefront with captivating, melancholic vocals from Mark Kozelek make Sun Kil Moon's discography incredibly enjoyable. The skillful songwriting of Kozelek certainly doesn't hurt, either.
Cloud Nothings
What originally began as a solo project of Dylan Baldi's (recording in his parents' basement) has turned into a full band-and a great band at that. The band's 2012 release, Attack on Memory, was recorded at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio in Chicago and was the first album of 2012 to receive the title 'Best New Music' from Pitchfork. Coming fresh off of their 2014 release, Here and Nowhere Else, Cloud Nothings is a highly anticipated act at this year's festival.

Certainly providing a unique sound to this year's festival, the music project of Merrill Garbus takes electronic pop music to a new level. The rhythmic schemes in each song are enough to grab your attention, but the way Tune-Yards utilizes layering and looping in addition to those schemes makes their music anything but predictable.
Slowdive
Slowdive is back, following a long break that started in 1995. With much excitement and joy from fans, Slowdive created a Twitter account in 2014 and announced that the band would be reuniting to play music festivals around the world. Catch the ambient sounds of Slowdive at Pitchfork on Sunday night.
Real Estate
Certainly not strangers to this event, Real Estate performed the Pitchfork Music Festival back in 2010, 2012, and will return again this summer. Their music, not too heavy or mellow, allows Real Estate to be incredibly refreshing to listen to.
DIIV
Yes, the name is pronounced 'Dive', which was actually how the band was first spelled (homage, if you will, to the Nirvana song). What originally started as a solo project for Zachary Cole Smith has blossomed into a fantastic 4-piece band. DIIV released their debut studio album, Oshin, through Captured Tracks in 2012.
Grimes
Grimes, an artist that easily stands out from the rest in electronic music, will be returning to the Pitchfork Music Festival this summer. Plenty of electronic and acoustic performance techniques allow Grimes' music to go from a very ethereal, ambient sound to an upbeat, percussive sound with seemingly minimal effort. Check out Grimes performing 'Oblivion' from her 2012 release, Visions.
Dum Dum Girls
Pitchfork has been praising the work of Dum Dum Girls since their debut album, I Will Be, was released back in 2010. Now three studio albums in, Dum Dum Girls delivers great music that seems to encompass the sounds of indie pop, garage rock, and lo-fi.
Neutral Milk Hotel
Though a headliner at this year's Pitchfork Music Festival, some may not yet be familiar with Neutral Milk Hotel. The band formed in 1989 and recorded three albums until disbanding in 1999. The year 2013 saw the reunion of the band, with tour dates to follow. Neutral Milk Hotel is known for incredibly melodic, yet lyrically powerful, songs. Be sure to catch them on Saturday night.

Four days of "heaven on earth" ... Creation music festival starting Wednesday ...

MOUNT UNION - If it seems like all roads in central and western Pennsylvania are leading here this week, there's a reason.
It's because thousands of visitors have been arriving at the scenic, sprawling campground known as the Agape Farm just outside this Huntingdon County town.
And when they get here, the guests are expecting to find 'a little bit of heaven on earth,' as one visitor put it recently.
Wednesday marks the start of the annual Creation Northeast festival, the yearly early-summer music and cultural event that typically draws some 50,000 to 100,000 visitors.
By the time Creation comes to a close Saturday night, spectators will be entertained by a who's-who of current Christian music, from Chris Tomlin (Wednesday's headliner) to TobyMac, Needtobreathe, the Newsboys, Matthew West and Hawk Nelson.
There's always a strong Lancaster County connection to the festival, since Creation got started at Muddy Run Park in 1979, and stayed there until it outgrew Muddy Run and moved west in 1984.
And even though the festival left the Garden Spot 30 years ago, it still has a strong connection to its original home, with countless thousands of Lancastrians attending as spectators, working as volunteers and otherwise staying involved in the festival.
Creation has long been the world's largest Christian music festival, and it added a second event, similar to Pennsylvania's, in Washington state in 1998.
Along with the main-stage entertainment, there also will be fringe, late-night and other stages, the annual candle-lighting and communion.
The schedule for the rest of the week includes:
--- Thursday, the band Green River Ordinance, 3:55 p.m.; rising group For King and Country, 6:05 p.m.; worship with singer-songwriter Brian Campbell at 7:05; popular artist Matthew West at 8:40; and veteran popular band the Newsboys at 10.
--- Friday, Britt Nicole, 5:50 p.m.; speaker Bob Lenz, 7:20; Family Force 5, 8:25; and TobyMac, 9:45
--- Saturday, the duo Capital Kings, 2:40 p.m.; the band Rapture Ruckus, 3:25; Hawk Nelson, 5 o'clock; Brian Campbell, 6:50; popular Christian/mainstream rock band Switchfoot, 8:25; and Needtobreathe, 9:45 p.m.

Some people are too busy being creative to worry about these things. With some people, when you scratch beneath the surface, unfortunately there is little substance to talk about. Then there are some people who have come in under the radar, conscientiously building great things in their own quiet way. These are the true masters, people who, when you dig deeper, you find famous productions, genius collaborations, exciting record labels and legendary club nights. Germany’s Alex Flatner is such a person, he may not yet be a household name but his career achievements so far are way beyond impressive. Anyone seeking a role model for how to operate successfully and with longevity in the electronic dance music industry today, should study Alex Flatner, the art of multi-tasking across disciplines has been honed to perfection by this congenial, self-effacing man from Munich. He runs his highly successful underground labels, Gedankensport and Circle Music; works as an A&R manager for labels including Harthouse and Plastic City; is a producer of immense talent and a highly regarded DJ who travels all over the globe at weekends. Alex Flatner’s first commercial release was in 1997 (Alex Flatner vs Mr Mono - This Transmission Com'On - Atomic Circle), having started to produce music in 1992 for his own enjoyment. A chance meeting with Corvin Dalek, A&R for the Berlin based MFS label (Paul van Dyk, Mijk van Dijk, Marcos Lopez, Marco Zaffarano), resulted in his first big hit, “Pounds & Penz”, played by Pete Tong, Timo Maas, Carl Cox and many other's. The record sold more then 50K copies (on vinyl) and was licensed to many compilations. Such huge success led to remix and production opportunities for Warners, Sony, EMI, London Records, Black Nation, Blue Amazon, News and many, many more. A personal highlight for Alex Flatner is his creative reworking of “Crystal” by New Order, a version much loved by Bernard Sumner. An introduction to the world of DJing came about by accident in 1995, when a new club opened (Electric Delicate) in his hometown of Munich. The DJ didn’t turn up one Saturday night, so Alex ended up spinning some records to keep the crowd entertained. He was so popular that he was asked to become resident DJ, the night becoming one of the most popular in the city at that time. Crucially, this new creative outlet in addition to his productions led to Alex Flatner’s name becoming known outside Germany. These days he can regularly be found behind the decks in Istanbul, Rome, Berlin (Watergate), Paris, Madrid (Fabrik), Bloemendaal (Woodstock 69), Rotterdam and many other major clubbing cities around the globe. Always wanting to learn and develop his skills further, Alex took on the role of A&R in 2002. Signing many projects for the Monoid label and also taking care of things for Plastic City and Harthouse. In early 2012, Alex Flatner and Lopazz (best known for the quality, avant-garde club music he’s released on labels like Get Physical, Cocoon, Pokerflat) have been locked in the studio at every available opportunity creating their debut artist album, a project that will feature some surprising collaborators. This creative meeting of minds began after they became good friends when Lopazz did a remix for Gedankensport and his wife (who has worked on several projects with Compost Records) recorded her Spanish vocals for Alex’s track “The Voice” (Circle Music, 2007). Alex then wrote “Perfect Circles” (Circle Music, 2008) featuring the voice of Lopazz, which received much big name DJ support, including Sven Väth, who played the track for a whole summer season in Ibiza and licensed it to his yearly Cocoon mix compilation. This huge success resulted in further work together for Cocoon (“Make Up Your Mind”, 2009) and then “Dinosaurs” (2010) for Steve Bug’s Poker Flat Recordings. Their next single release is scheduled for release on Get Physical at the end of April 2012. After such illustrious beginnings, the debut album by Alex Flatner and Lopazz is sure to be one of the musical highlights of the year.
